Well, all I can say is - it is definetly not a highway.... If I had to name it I would call it "If you have an RV, stay away!!!" Road...
We woke up late as usual, and decided to eat light breakfast and eat a good big brunch later as we only had 80 more miles to go. I was ok with having brunch about an 1.5 hours later. Ohhh, what a mistake...
1.5 hours later, we were 27 miles in, with no way out and an additional 50+ miles to go. Our intestines were heavily scrambled and the spirits at the back of the RV were low. It is hard to enjoy the scenery in these conditions.
The weather did not do us good either. I like cloudy weather, but not when I travel. Most of what we saw from the back windows was gray and full of clouds and mist.
When you seat at the back of the RV, you don't get the full view you get when sitting in the front where you get to see the upcoming view from 180 degrees.
At the back, on the other hand, you get to view mostly the sides of the road. Which is nice, but not asnice as sitting in the front. I mean, I like trees, but if that's all you see for 4.5 hours - it becomes boring....
Onour previous RV trips, we got RV's that had one window in the back, so this RV is a huge improvment as it has 2 big windows, one on each side, and you get to see a lot more of the scenery. However, I have to admit that it is still not as good as sitting in an SUV, where even if you sit at the back, you still get to see a lot more of the scenery. (You can read more about my feelings towards RV's on this post...)
Anyways, Zeevik stopped in many places to allow us to get out of the RV, stretch our legs and enjoys watching the nature surrounding us. The mountains along the crawling road are so tall, they all have a crown of clouds covering them. The water streams all around and there are sooooo many trees. Do you know the expression "cant see the forest for the trees"(An expression used of someone who is too involved in the details of a problem to look at the situation as a whole)? In Alaska's scenery this is literally true... There are so many trees it is impossible to see the forest. And they all grow so close to each other, and their trunks are so tall and thin. It is the strangest forst I have ever seen.
5 hours later we were finally out of Denali's highway. The map showed a small town named Paxton 30 minutes away, so we agreed we'll get there and find something to eat.
When we got to the junction that had "Paxton" on the map, we saw 3 crumbeling buildings. We think those were the remenence of Paxton... nothing to see here :-(
We continued south on our way to Valdez, and spent the night somewhere on the way. After dinner from the local Thai restaurant (nothing to write home about....) we had an early night (10:00pm...) with hopes for a better weather tomorrow...
